About brewing

Brewing calculators cover the math homebrewers run for every batch: ABV from OG and FG (basic vs Daniels formula), IBU using Tinseth, Rager, or Garetz, SRM color from MCU + Morey, mash temperature for a target enzyme activity, strike-water temperature, hop utilization by boil time and gravity, priming sugar for any target carbonation level, water profile adjustment by mineral additions, and brewhouse efficiency.

Use these tools when planning a new recipe at a target ABV and IBU, dialing in mash temperature for a drier vs fuller body, computing strike water at 11 gallons mash water and 152°F target rest, balancing hop bitterness for a 6.5% IPA, picking priming sugar for a German wheat (high CO2) vs an English bitter (low CO2), or adjusting your water to match a Burton-on-Trent IPA profile.

Sources: Palmer's How to Brew, John Daniels' Designing Great Beers, Tinseth IBU paper, Briess and Weyermann maltster spec sheets. Defaults to homebrew scale (5 US gallons); toggle to metric or commercial batch sizes.

Common use cases

Real scenarios where the brewing calculators in this category earn their keep.

ABV from gravity

ABV ≈ (OG - FG) × 131.25 (basic) or the Daniels equation for higher-gravity beers (above 1.060). The ABV tool runs both for your specific gravities.

IBU from hop additions

Tinseth utilization formula given boil gravity, boil time, and hop AA%. Aggregate the IBU contribution of multiple additions for the recipe total.

Strike water temperature

Strike temp = (0.2/r) × (target - grain temp) + target, where r = water-to-grain ratio. The mash tool computes strike for your target rest.

Priming sugar by style

British ales 1.5-2.0 volumes CO2; American ales 2.2-2.6; wheat 3.0-4.0. The priming calculator outputs corn-sugar, table-sugar, or DME grams for your batch size and style.

Water profile to match a style

Target chloride:sulfate ratio (1:1 balanced, 2:1 malty, 1:3 hoppy). Add gypsum, calcium chloride, or epsom salt in grams to hit the profile.

Key terms

Glossary for the formulas and conventions these tools use.

OG / FG
Original Gravity / Final Gravity. Specific gravity of the wort before fermentation and beer after. Difference drives ABV.
ABV
Alcohol By Volume. ≈ (OG - FG) × 131.25 for typical beers. Higher-gravity needs Daniels or Cutaia formulas.
IBU
International Bittering Unit. Milligrams of isomerised alpha acid per liter. 5 IBU = light lager floor, 20-30 amber ale, 50-80 IPA, 80+ DIPA.
SRM
Standard Reference Method. Beer color scale. SRM 2-4 pale, 6-12 amber, 18-30 brown, 40+ stout/porter.
Mash efficiency
Percentage of grain potential sugar extracted into the wort. 70-75% is typical homebrew; commercial breweries hit 80-90%.
Tinseth
Glenn Tinseth's 1995 IBU utilization formula, the homebrew standard. More accurate than Rager for typical homebrew boil sizes.
Burton water
High-sulfate water profile from Burton-on-Trent, England. Emphasises hop bitterness. ~270 ppm sulfate, ~50 ppm chloride.

Frequently asked questions

Short answers to the most common brewing questions.

Which ABV formula is more accurate?
For beers under 1.060 OG, the basic (OG-FG) × 131.25 is within 0.2% of the truth. Above 1.060, Daniels or Cutaia gives a meaningfully better estimate. The ABV tool defaults to Daniels above the threshold.
How accurate is the Tinseth IBU calculator?
Tinseth's utilization curves were measured on small homebrew boils and are within ~10% of professionally-measured IBU. Beer style and water chemistry shift perceived bitterness more than IBU rounding does.
What's the right strike water temperature for a single infusion mash?
Aim 8-12°F above your target rest, depending on the water:grain ratio. The strike calculator handles thermal mass for your specific equipment, grain bill, and starting temperature.
How much priming sugar for a 5-gallon batch?
American ale (2.4 vol CO2): about 4 oz corn sugar. Wheat beer (3.5 vol): about 6 oz. The priming calculator outputs grams for any volume + target.
How do I adjust my water for an IPA?
Boost sulfate to 150-300 ppm (gypsum), keep chloride 50-100 ppm. Target chloride:sulfate 1:3 to 1:5. The water-adjustment tool outputs grams of each mineral salt for your batch size.
