About insurance
Insurance calculators cover the coverage-need and premium-rationality questions every household runs once a year: term life insurance amount (income-replacement vs DIME method), term vs whole life break-even, umbrella liability sizing, health insurance HDHP vs PPO total-cost comparison, HSA contribution optimisation, vehicle insurance liability limit picks, renters insurance personal-property coverage, and disability insurance income replacement.
Use these to answer: how much term life coverage do I need with 2 kids and a $400k mortgage, when does whole life ever beat buy-term-and-invest-the-difference, do I need an umbrella policy if I have a pool and a teen driver, will I save money with an HDHP + HSA vs a PPO at my expected utilisation, and what state-minimum auto liability is really enough.
Sources: actuarial life-tables (SOA), Insurance Information Institute baseline rates, NAIC consumer guides, IRS HSA limits. Tools are decision-support; bind coverage through a licensed agent.
Common use cases
Real scenarios where the insurance calculators in this category earn their keep.
Term life amount (DIME)
Debt + Income (10× annual) + Mortgage + Education (kids' college). The DIME calculator sums these and subtracts existing coverage.
Term vs whole life
Buy term + invest the difference vs whole life. Run the 30-year compounded difference at a conservative return assumption to see which leaves more for heirs.
HDHP + HSA vs PPO
Annual cost = premium + expected out-of-pocket up to MOOP. Subtract HSA tax savings. The tool runs both plans for your expected utilisation tier (low / medium / high).
Umbrella liability size
Cover your net worth + 5 years of future income. Standard $1M-$5M policies cost $200-$600/year. The umbrella tool sizes based on your asset and income picture.
Vehicle insurance liability limits
State minimums (often 25/50/25) are dangerously low. The tool recommends 100/300/100 for moderate net worth, higher with an umbrella attached.
Key terms
Glossary for the formulas and conventions these tools use.
- DIME formula
- Term life need = Debt + Income replacement (10×) + Mortgage + Education for dependents. Subtract existing group and personal coverage.
- MOOP
- Maximum Out-Of-Pocket. The annual cap on what you pay in deductibles + copays + coinsurance before insurance pays 100%.
- HDHP
- High-Deductible Health Plan. Required for HSA eligibility. Higher deductibles in exchange for lower premiums + tax-advantaged HSA.
- Umbrella policy
- Excess liability that sits on top of your auto and home liability limits. Cheap per million of coverage; protects net worth from catastrophic suits.
- Term life
- Pure insurance with no cash value. Premium fixed for the term (10/20/30 years). Cheaper than whole life by 5-10× at comparable coverage.
- Whole life
- Permanent insurance with a cash-value component. Premium fixed for life. More expensive; rarely beats buy-term-and-invest mathematically for healthy buyers.
- Long-term disability (LTD)
- Income replacement (typically 60% of base salary) if you can't work due to illness or injury. Employer group is the cheapest source.
