About business & saas

Business and SaaS calculators cover the unit-economics and runway math founders and finance teams revisit weekly: CAC, LTV, CAC payback period, churn (logo vs revenue, gross vs net), MRR, ARR, the Rule of 40, runway from burn, breakeven units, gross margin, contribution margin, freelance hourly rate, Amazon FBA fee calculation, and basic SaaS valuation multiples.

Use these tools to answer: what's our blended CAC for the last quarter, is our LTV:CAC ratio above 3:1, do we pass the Rule of 40 (growth + margin >= 40), how many months of runway at current burn, what monthly recurring revenue do we need to break even, and what hourly rate should I charge as a freelancer to net my target take-home.

Sources: David Skok's SaaS Metrics 2.0, Bessemer Cloud Index for multiples, Tomasz Tunguz on payback periods, Andreessen Horowitz unit economics primers. Defaults match SaaS conventions; toggle to ecommerce / agency where the tool branches.

Common use cases

Real scenarios where the business & saas calculators in this category earn their keep.

CAC payback period

CAC / (ARPU × gross margin %). Months to recoup acquisition cost. Best-in-class SaaS: under 12 months. Healthy: 12-18. Concerning: 18+.

Runway from cash + burn

Runway months = cash on hand / net monthly burn. The tool models a runway extension scenario at a target hiring or revenue pace.

Pricing for a target gross margin

Price = COGS / (1 - target margin). The pricing tool runs this with channel fees, payment processing, and tax considerations stacked in.

Freelance hourly rate

Target annual take-home / (billable hours × utilisation). Add self-employment tax, health insurance, retirement contributions, and 3 weeks unpaid leave to get to required gross.

Rule of 40 check

Annual revenue growth % + EBITDA margin % >= 40. A 50% grower at -10% margin passes; a 20% grower at 20% margin passes; both metrics matter.

Key terms

Glossary for the formulas and conventions these tools use.

CAC
Customer Acquisition Cost. Total sales + marketing spend in a period divided by net new customers added. Blended (all channels) or per-channel.
LTV
Customer Lifetime Value. ARPU × gross margin / churn (in the steady state). LTV:CAC of 3:1 or better is the canonical healthy ratio.
MRR / ARR
Monthly / Annual Recurring Revenue. ARR = MRR × 12. Drives SaaS valuation multiples; non-recurring revenue gets a lower multiple.
Net Revenue Retention
(Starting MRR + expansion - churn - downgrades) / starting MRR. Above 100% means expansion outpaces churn, growth even with no new logos.
Rule of 40
Growth rate % + profitability margin % >= 40. Heuristic for SaaS company health, used by growth investors as a screening rule.
Burn multiple
Net burn / net new ARR added. Below 1.0 = great; 1-2 = good; 2-3 = okay; 3+ = inefficient growth.
Gross margin
(Revenue - COGS) / Revenue. SaaS targets 75-85%; services 30-50%; ecommerce 20-50% depending on category.

Frequently asked questions

Short answers to the most common business & saas questions.

What's a healthy LTV:CAC ratio?
3:1 is the heuristic. Below 1:1 is unprofitable. 1:1 to 2:1 is bleeding. 3:1 is healthy. 5:1+ may mean you're under-investing in growth. The LTV/CAC tool runs the calculation with your gross margin and churn.
Is our SaaS company passing the Rule of 40?
If (revenue growth % + EBITDA margin %) >= 40, yes. The Rule-of-40 calculator runs the math from your top-line growth and operating margin. Cloud-Index public comparables run 35-50 typical.
How do I compute runway accurately?
Runway = cash on hand / net monthly burn. Net burn = cash out - cash in (not P&L loss). The runway calculator separates the two, projects hires, and flags the 6-month milestone.
What hourly rate should I charge as a freelancer?
Target annual take-home / (billable hours × utilisation %). Add SE tax, benefits, time off. A freelancer wanting $100k take-home at 60% utilisation across 2,000 hours needs about $115/hr. The freelance-rate tool runs the calculation including your tax bracket.
What multiple should a SaaS company trade at?
Public Cloud Index ranges 5-15× forward ARR depending on growth and margin. Private deals run lower for sub-$10M ARR. The valuation tool flags reasonable ranges based on growth rate and Rule-of-40 score.
