About construction
Construction calculators cover the volume, area, and material math homeowners and contractors run before every project: concrete by cubic yard / cubic meter, lumber board-feet, drywall sheets (4×8 and 4×12), paint coverage by square footage with primer + finish coats, roofing squares and bundles, deck board count by spacing, gravel and mulch by depth, firewood cords, insulation R-value, tile and grout per square footage, and stair rise/run for building code compliance.
Use these tools before a Home Depot or Lowe's run: how many 80 lb concrete bags for a 4×8 patio at 4 inches thick, how many 2×4×8 studs at 16 inches on center for a 12-foot wall, how many gallons of paint for a 2,000 sq ft house with 9-ft ceilings, how many shingles for a 30-square roof with a 6/12 pitch, or how much mulch (in cubic yards) for a 40-foot bed at 3 inches deep.
Sources: IRC (International Residential Code) for stair geometry and load tables, ASTM standards for concrete mixes, NRCA roofing references, Sherwin-Williams and Behr coverage rates. Defaults match standard US/metric trade practice; toggle units per project.
Common use cases
Real scenarios where the construction calculators in this category earn their keep.
Concrete for a patio or slab
Length × width × depth in feet, divided by 27 for cubic yards. The tool adds 10% waste and converts to 80 lb bag count for small jobs.
Paint by room
Wall area minus doors and windows, divided by coverage rate (typically 350 sq ft/gallon). The tool handles primer + 2 finish coats and ceiling separately.
Deck framing
Joist spacing (12, 16, 24 in OC), board count, fastener count, and total board-feet of pressure-treated lumber for any rectangular deck footprint.
Roof shingles by square
1 square = 100 sq ft of roof surface. The calculator handles pitch (slope multiplier), valley waste, and starter-strip math.
Stair rise and run
Total floor-to-floor height divided into 7-7.75 inch risers per IRC. Compute the corresponding tread depth (10-11 in) and total run length.
Key terms
Glossary for the formulas and conventions these tools use.
- Cubic yard
- 27 cubic feet (3×3×3). Standard unit for concrete, mulch, gravel, and topsoil delivery in the US.
- Board foot
- 144 cubic inches of lumber (1×12×12 inches). Used to price hardwood and rough-sawn lumber, distinct from linear feet.
- Square (roofing)
- 100 square feet of roof surface. Asphalt shingles are sold by the square or per bundle (3 bundles per square typically).
- Pitch
- Rise per 12 inches of run. A 6/12 pitch rises 6 inches over a 12-inch horizontal run. Affects shingle count and walkability.
- On-center (OC)
- Distance between framing members measured center-to-center. Standard residential framing is 16 in OC for walls, 16 or 24 in OC for joists.
- R-value
- Thermal resistance of insulation. Higher = better. R-19 batts fit 2×6 walls, R-13 fits 2×4 walls, R-49 is typical attic standard in cold climates.
- Riser / tread
- Vertical / horizontal portion of a stair step. IRC requires 4-7.75 inch risers and 10+ inch treads for residential stairs.
