How pet age maps to human age
The old '1 dog year = 7 human years' rule is wrong. Dogs age fast early and slow down later. A 2017 UCSD study using DNA methylation found:
Human age = 16 x ln(dog age) + 31
This means a 1-year-old dog is roughly 31 years old in human terms (not 7); a 4-year-old is ~53; a 10-year-old is ~68.

Cat ideal weight
Most domestic cats should weigh 3.6-4.5kg (8-10 lb). Breed extremes:
- Singapura: 1.8-3.6kg
- Siamese: 3-5kg
- Persian: 4-6kg
- Maine Coon: 5-8kg (males up to 11kg)
Body condition score (BCS) from 1 (emaciated) to 9 (severely obese). Healthy cats sit at 4-5. You should be able to feel ribs without pressing hard and see a slight waist from above.

How accurate is the dog-to-human age calculation?
The DNA methylation formula is accurate for adult Labradors (the original study population). It's a good approximation for medium dogs but overestimates for toy breeds and underestimates for giants. For practical purposes, all formulas are heuristics - your vet's assessment based on dental, joint, and organ health is more useful.
How much should I feed my pet?
Start with RER x activity factor, weigh weekly, adjust ±10% if weight drifts. Bag-of-food guidance is usually 10-30% too high. The best feedback signal is a stable, healthy body weight - not an empty bowl.
Why do indoor cats live longer than outdoor cats?
Indoor cats average 15-17 years; outdoor cats 5-8 years. Causes of premature outdoor death: traffic, predators, infectious disease (FIV/FeLV), poisoning, fights. Indoor cats are also less obese on average if portion-controlled.
Is grain-free pet food better?
Not for most pets. The FDA in 2018-19 linked grain-free diets (especially those high in legumes) to dilated cardiomyopathy in dogs. Unless your vet diagnoses a grain allergy (rare), grain-inclusive foods are safer and often nutritionally superior.
