Background removal automatically separates a foreground subject (person, product, pet) from its background and outputs a transparent PNG. Until 2020 this required Photoshop's magic-wand and a steady hand; now small ML models (U-2-Net, MODNet, BiRefNet) handle the task accurately in milliseconds.
This tool runs an in-browser ML model via WebAssembly - your photo is never uploaded. It works best on photos with clear separation between subject and background: a person against a contrasting wall, a product on a plain surface, a pet on grass. Hair, fur, transparent objects (glasses, glass bottles), and motion-blurred edges are the hardest cases - manual touch-up may be needed.

Tips and best practices
- Photograph against a contrasting background - white subject on dark, dark subject on white - for the cleanest auto-cutout.
- Even lighting helps. Hard shadows can confuse edge detection.
- For e-commerce, photograph products on white. Even with a perfect cutout, white-to-white is the most forgiving for marketplace listings.
- After cutout, paste onto a solid color before downloading if you need a JPG output (JPG cannot keep transparency).
