What is MAGI Calculator?

A MAGI Calculator computes magi from the inputs you provide. It applies the standard formula to the values you enter and returns the result instantly, without sending any data to a server. Free MAGI Calculator. The tool runs entirely in.

About this tool

Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI) is AGI plus certain deductions added back. Different programs use different MAGI definitions. For Roth IRA, MAGI = AGI + traditional IRA deduction + student loan interest deduction + foreign earned income exclusion. The 2025 Roth IRA phaseouts: single $146-161K, MFJ $230-240K.

How it works

MAGI (Roth) = AGI + IRA_deduction + student_loan_int + foreign_income_excl

Enter your AGI from Form 1040 line 11, plus any of the adjustments. The calculator returns Roth IRA MAGI and your Roth eligibility for 2025.

How to use the MAGI Calculator

The MAGI Calculator is a browser-based tool that runs entirely on your device. Inputs you enter never reach a server - all calculations happen client-side in JavaScript. This means:

  • Privacy: nothing is logged, sent, or stored by 3Tej. Inputs disappear when you close the tab.
  • Speed: results update as you type. No network round trip.
  • Offline use: once the page is cached, it works without internet.
  • No signup: no account, no email, no rate limits.

Step by step

  1. Enter your inputs in the form above. Each field is labeled with its unit (currency, percent, kg, etc.) and the expected range.
  2. Read the result as it updates. The number reflects the formula commonly accepted in MAGI-related calculations.
  3. Adjust to see sensitivity: change one input at a time and watch how the output moves. This is the fastest way to understand which variable matters most.
  4. Copy or screenshot the result for later reference. The page state persists for the session if your browser allows it.

When you would use this

  • Quick estimates: when you need a number now and don't want to open a spreadsheet.
  • Sensitivity analysis: testing how a result changes as inputs vary, before committing to a real-world decision.
  • Comparison: running the same calculation with different inputs to compare options side by side.
  • Learning: building intuition for how the underlying math behaves.
  • Documentation: capturing a snapshot of inputs and outputs at a point in time.

The formula explained

This calculator uses the following formula:

MAGI (Roth) = AGI + IRA_deduction + student_loan_int + foreign_income_excl

The reason this formula works is rooted in the underlying physics, finance, or biology of the problem. Behind every calculator is a published, peer-reviewed equation or a widely accepted convention. We do not invent formulas; we apply standard ones from textbooks, government tables, professional bodies, and academic literature.

If you are curious about the math, the simplest way to verify is to plug in two known numbers and compare against a known result. The calculator should match published examples to within rounding precision.

MAGI add-backs and phaseouts that catch people out

The "modified" part of MAGI is the trap: each program adds different items back to your Form 1040 line 11 AGI. For Roth IRA eligibility the 2025 add-backs are the traditional IRA deduction, the student loan interest deduction, the foreign earned income exclusion and foreign housing exclusion, and excluded savings-bond interest. ACA premium-credit MAGI instead adds back tax-exempt municipal interest and the non-taxable portion of Social Security.

Filing status (2025)Full Roth belowNo direct Roth above
Single / Head of Household$146,000$161,000
Married Filing Jointly$230,000$240,000
Married Filing Separately$0$10,000

Pitfall: a Roth conversion or a large capital gain raises AGI and therefore MAGI in the same year, which can simultaneously push you past the Roth contribution ceiling and trigger the 3.8% Net Investment Income Tax (MAGI over $200K single, $250K MFJ). Model the conversion before December, not at filing time.

Frequently asked questions

What MAGI for Roth IRA?

Phaseout 2025 single $146-161K, MFJ $230-240K. Above means no direct Roth (use backdoor).

MAGI vs AGI?

Different definitions per use case. Roth IRA MAGI adds back IRA deduction, student loan interest, foreign earned income.

Where to find AGI?

Form 1040 line 11. Adjusted gross income before standard deduction or itemized.

How to lower MAGI?

Max 401(k), HSA, FSA. Pre-tax contributions reduce AGI. Avoid taxable interest if near phaseout.

Is MAGI the same for ACA subsidies and Roth IRA?

No. ACA premium-tax-credit MAGI adds tax-exempt interest and the untaxed part of Social Security to AGI, while Roth IRA MAGI instead adds back the IRA deduction, student loan interest, and the foreign earned income exclusion. Same starting AGI, two different MAGI figures.

Does the Roth IRA deduction get added back to its own MAGI?

There is no Roth deduction to add back (Roth contributions are after-tax). What gets added back is the traditional IRA deduction. If you deducted a traditional IRA contribution, that amount is added to AGI before testing your Roth contribution limit.

Is the MAGI Calculator accurate?

The MAGI Calculator applies the standard formula for magi. Accuracy is limited only by your input precision. For decisions with material consequences, use the result as a starting point and verify with a qualified professional or the relevant official source.

Is the MAGI Calculator free?

Yes. 100% free, no signup, no payment, no API key. The site is funded by display ads that appear around the tool but not inside the calculation flow.

Are my inputs saved?

No. Inputs stay in your browser tab. Closing the tab discards them. The site uses Google Analytics for traffic measurement (anonymized) but does not see what you type into the form.

Can I use the MAGI Calculator on my phone?

Yes. The tool is responsive and tested on iOS Safari, Android Chrome, and major desktop browsers. Touch targets meet Apple's 44pt and Google's 48dp minimum guidance.

How do I report a bug or suggest improvement to the MAGI Calculator?

Email hi@3tej.com with the URL of this page and a description of what you saw vs expected. We typically respond within 72 hours and update calculators when rules or formulas change.

How accurate is the MAGI Calculator?

It applies the standard formula. Accuracy is limited only by your input precision. For decisions with material consequences (taxes, medical, legal, structural), use the result as a starting point and verify with a qualified professional in the relevant field.

Is the MAGI Calculator free to use?

Yes. 100% free, no signup, no payment, no API key. The site is funded by display ads around the tool but not inside the calculation flow.

Are my inputs saved anywhere?

No. All inputs stay in your browser tab. Closing the tab discards them. The site uses Google Analytics for traffic measurement (anonymized) but the analytics never see what you type into the form.

Does the MAGI Calculator work offline?

Yes. Once the page has loaded, it works without internet. The calculation runs in JavaScript on your device.

Can I share results from the MAGI Calculator?

Take a screenshot or copy the output. The page doesn't generate shareable URLs for specific calculations - inputs stay in your browser only.

Why are the results different from another magi tool?

Most likely: different formula assumptions, different default values, different rounding rules, or different applicable rates. Check the methodology if both tools document it. Both can be valid for different scenarios.
