About this tool
The Age in Days Calculator returns the total number of calendar days elapsed between a date of birth and today, with optional conversion to weeks, hours, and minutes. It is the most precise human-scale age unit because a day is always 24 hours (modulo daylight saving), unlike months and years which vary in length.
How it works
Elapsed milliseconds = Date.now() - parseDate(dob) Days elapsed = floor(Elapsed milliseconds / 86,400,000) Weeks elapsed = floor(Days / 7) Hours elapsed = Days x 24 Minutes elapsed = Days x 1,440
- Julian day number (JDN) arithmetic underlies the result: every Gregorian date maps to a unique integer, so the difference is a simple subtraction. 86,400,000 ms equals one day (no leap seconds in POSIX time).
- Leap-year adjustments are absorbed automatically. A century averages 36,524.25 days (365.2425 x 100).
- Inclusive versus exclusive bounds matter: most calculators (including this one) report 0 days for a person born today.
- Daylight saving is handled correctly when both anchor and current time are read as Date objects on the same engine; raw millisecond differences can drift 1 hour at the boundary but the floor-divide-by-86,400,000 keeps day counts honest.
Worked example
Compute the age in days for someone born February 14, 2000, evaluated May 28, 2026:
- Anchor dates: birth 2000-02-14, evaluation 2026-05-28.
- Year span: 26 calendar years plus the period Feb 14 to May 28 (103 days into year 27).
- Leap days in span: 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020, 2024 = 7 leap days (2000 is divisible by 400, so it is a leap year).
- Days from full years: 26 x 365 + 7 = 9,497 days.
- Plus partial year: Feb 14 to May 28: 14 (Feb remaining) + 31 (Mar) + 30 (Apr) + 28 (May to 28) = 103 days.
- Total: 9,497 + 103 = 9,600 days, or 1,371 weeks and 3 days.

Common pitfalls
- Inclusive versus exclusive bounds. Born today and evaluated today: 0 days, not 1. Born yesterday and evaluated today: 1 day. The standard convention excludes the start anchor from the count.
- Timezone handling. Birth recorded in Asia at 23:30 local but evaluated in California reads as a different calendar day, flipping the count by 1 near the dateline crossover. Pin both to UTC for precision.
- Daylight saving transitions. Computing a difference in milliseconds across a spring-forward day gives 23 x 3,600,000 ms instead of 24 x; falling back gives 25. Dividing by 86,400,000 and flooring still produces a clean integer day count, but partial-day fractions can be off.
- Calendar month variation. A "30-day month" is February in a non-leap year, but May has 31 and February has 28. Using "12 x 30 = 360 days = 1 year" miscounts by 5 to 6 days per year.
- Leap-day birthdays. A person born Feb 29 in 1992 has had only 8 actual birthdays by 2024 (1996, 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020, 2024). Age in days correctly reports 11,688 days = 32 years.
- JavaScript month index.
new Date(2026, 0, 1)means January 1, 2026 because month is zero-indexed. Hand-rolled code often slips here and produces off-by-one-month dates.

Frequently asked questions
What is the average lifespan in days?
WHO 2024 life-expectancy data: US 76.3 years = 27,879 days; UK 80.7 = 29,488; Japan 84.4 = 30,839; Bangladesh 72.6 = 26,524. Japan tops the list; Liechtenstein and Monaco also exceed 85. The pandemic shaved a year or two off US life expectancy in 2021 before partial recovery.
How does this handle leap years?
It counts actual calendar days including Feb 29s. JavaScript's millisecond-based Date math automatically includes them. A 30-year-old born March 1, 1995 has lived through 8 leap days (1996, 2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020, 2024), so 30 x 365 + 8 = 10,958 days, not 10,950.
Why is my day count slightly different from another calculator?
Convention. Some calculators include the start date (1-based), some exclude it (0-based). This tool excludes both endpoints from being double-counted: a person born today has lived 0 full days, a person born yesterday has lived 1 day. Off-by-one differences are normal and not bugs.
Does timezone affect the result?
Yes near midnight. The browser reads your local clock, so a birthday recorded at 11:30 PM in Asia and read at 12:30 AM in Europe drifts by 1 day. For research and legal use, pin both birth and evaluation to UTC by appending T00:00:00Z to the date.
