About this tool + how it works

This tool runs 100% in your browser - the libraries load from a public CDN and the math runs on your device. Nothing is uploaded to a server. The underlying logic is:

1. Header: name + contact, today's date, company name.
2. Salutation: 'Dear [Name]' if known, 'Dear Hiring Team' otherwise.
3. Body: opening sentence stating the role + why-now, three strengths, why-this-company, soft close.
4. Sign-off: 'Sincerely, [Name]'.

You can verify by opening the browser developer tools and watching the Network tab; you'll see no requests fired during normal use beyond the initial page and library load.

Real-world scenarios where this tool helps

Standard application

Most jobs want a friendly but professional cover letter. Standard template fits 80% of cases.

Senior IC or executive role

Direct template skips small talk and gets to value fast. Senior hiring managers don't have time.

When you have a great story

Story-led template opens with a concrete moment from your work. Memorable but riskier; use when the story really lands.

Switching careers

Career-change template names the gap, addresses transferable skills, and gives concrete proof points. Don't pretend you're not switching.

What this tool does

  • Generates a complete cover letter from your inputs in under 60 seconds.
  • Provides four templates tuned for different scenarios (Standard, Direct, Story-led, Career-change).
  • Lets you preview live as you type.
  • Copies the letter to your clipboard with one click.
  • Exports as a clean serif PDF using jsPDF.

What it does NOT do

  • Doesn't write personalized content for you. You provide three real strengths and the why-this-company; the tool just structures them.
  • Doesn't do AI rewriting. Want your text polished? Drop the output into ChatGPT or Claude after.
  • Doesn't save drafts - close the tab and it's gone.
  • Doesn't score the letter or grade it. Read it yourself and ask one trusted person.
  • Doesn't include images, headers, or fancy formatting. Most ATS systems strip them anyway.

Common mistakes and pitfalls

  • Repeating your resume bullet-for-bullet. The cover letter should add color, not duplicate.
  • Forgetting to mention the company. Hiring managers can tell when a letter was written for any job.
  • Going long. Aim for 250-350 words. If you need more, your resume should carry it.
  • Using 'Dear Hiring Manager' when you can find the name. LinkedIn or the job posting often reveals the recruiter; use their name.
  • Forgetting to read it aloud. Anything that trips your tongue trips the reader's eye.

Frequently asked questions

Is the cover letter generator free?

Yes. Free forever, no signup, no watermark. Runs in your browser.

Should I always include a cover letter?

Yes when the application allows it. A short personalized letter can lift you above otherwise-equal candidates.

How long should a cover letter be?

250-400 words, three to four short paragraphs. One page max.

Which template should I pick?

Standard for most cases. Direct if the company culture is curt or the role is senior. Story-led when you have a concrete moment to anchor on. Career-change when you're switching fields.

Should I tailor it for every job?

Yes - at minimum the role, company name, and why-this-company. The strengths can stay similar across applications.

Can I edit after downloading?

The PDF is final. Edit before downloading. Or download, then edit in Word / Google Docs after re-typing.

Will an ATS read my cover letter?

Some do, most don't. ATS focus on the resume. The cover letter is mainly read by humans (recruiter, then hiring manager).

Should I include salary expectations?

Only if asked. Putting it unprompted can knock you out of consideration before you negotiate.

How is this different from ChatGPT?

ChatGPT writes the prose; this tool structures the format and gives a downloadable PDF. Combine both: generate here, polish in ChatGPT, paste back, re-export.

Does it support languages other than English?

The structure works in any language - paste content in your language. The labels (Dear, Sincerely) are English by default; edit by hand if needed.
