About investing & fire
Investing and FIRE (Financial Independence, Retire Early) calculators cover compound interest, monthly SIP and lump-sum projections, the 4% safe withdrawal rate, FIRE number sizing (LeanFIRE, FatFIRE, CoastFIRE, BaristaFIRE), retirement corpus targeting, sequence-of-returns risk modeling, asset-allocation drift, bond YTM and duration, dividend reinvestment, and the Mega Backdoor Roth IRA path.
Use these tools to answer: what's my FIRE number at $80k of annual expenses, can I CoastFIRE at age 35 with $400k invested, how does a 60/40 portfolio survive a 30-year drawdown, what's the difference between investing $500/month in an S&P 500 index vs a target-date fund, and how do I model a Backdoor Roth conversion ladder for early retirement.
Sources: SSA actuarial tables for life expectancy, Trinity Study (Cooley/Hubbard/Walz) for the 4% rule, Shiller CAPE data for valuation context, Vanguard expense ratios for cost assumptions. We don't predict returns; we let you stress-test your plan against historical sequences.
Common use cases
Real scenarios where the investing & fire calculators in this category earn their keep.
Compute your FIRE number
FIRE number = annual expenses × 25 (the 4% rule inversion). The FIRE calculator subtracts expected Social Security, pension, or part-time income and runs sensitivity on inflation.
CoastFIRE checkpoint
Find the age at which your current portfolio compounds to your FIRE number without further contributions. Useful if you want to step back from high-paying work in your 40s.
4% rule safe withdrawal
Apply the Trinity-Study-derived 4% inflation-adjusted withdrawal on a 60/40 or 75/25 portfolio. The tool runs the historical success rate over 30 years.
SIP corpus projection
Compound a monthly SIP at your assumed return (8-12% for equity in India), step-up rate, and tenure. Output the corpus and the tax liability at the end.
Mega Backdoor Roth ladder
Model after-tax 401(k) contributions converted to Roth, plus a Roth conversion ladder during early retirement to access funds penalty-free before 59½.
Key terms
Glossary for the formulas and conventions these tools use.
- 4% rule
- Withdraw 4% of starting portfolio in year 1, then adjust that dollar amount for inflation each subsequent year. Historically survived 30 years in 95%+ of starting periods for 60/40 stocks-bonds.
- FIRE number
- Annual expenses × 25 (or × 30 for a more conservative SWR). The portfolio size at which the 4% rule covers your spending indefinitely.
- CoastFIRE
- You've saved enough that, without further contributions, compounding alone reaches your FIRE number by traditional retirement age. You only need to cover current expenses, not save for retirement.
- Sequence-of-returns risk
- The risk that poor early returns in retirement permanently impair the portfolio. Mitigated by glide-path bond allocation in the first 10 years of retirement.
- Roth conversion ladder
- Convert Traditional IRA / 401(k) to Roth at low marginal rates during early retirement. After the 5-year seasoning, the principal can be withdrawn penalty-free before 59½.
- Expense ratio
- Annual percentage of fund assets paid to the manager. Index funds (0.03-0.20%) vs active funds (0.5-1.5%). Drag compounds over decades.
- Asset allocation
- Mix of equities, bonds, cash, REITs, and alternatives. 60/40 (stocks/bonds) is the default balanced; 100/0 max-aggressive; bond glide path tilts to bonds as you age.
